OuroDesk vs Canopy: all-in-one practice management
Canopy describes itself as all-in-one practice management for accounting firms, and it has grown into a genuinely broad product: time and billing, payments, capacity planning, close automation, tax resolution, transcripts, an AI notetaker and its own AI agent. OuroDesk is narrower and deeper in one place — the signed proposal and getting paid for it. Neither is a superset of the other.
Canopy is pitched at the whole firm, including advisory, audit and private-equity teams, and at the finance leader as much as the practitioner. OuroDesk is pitched at whoever owns the engagement and the money: the person who has to get a proposal signed and an invoice paid. Both are legitimate. They are aimed at different desks.
Feature by feature
Every OuroDesk row describes what is live in the product today. Anything unfinished is marked Coming soon rather than quietly omitted.

- Lower entry price and no sales gate
Canopy lists $74 per user per month on Standard, $109 on Plus and $149 on Premium, all billed annually, and routes every enquiry through a demo. OuroDesk Pro is $29 per seat per month, month to month, Public sign-up is not open yet.
- A signed proposal you can prove
OuroDesk signs the exact version the client saw with Ed25519, timestamps it to RFC 3161, and publishes a verification link with configurable disclosure. Canopy offers e-signature; it does not advertise public cryptographic verification.
- Corrections are amendments, not edits
A sent proposal in OuroDesk is frozen. Changes are classified minor, material or critical, so signatures are either preserved or deliberately re-collected. Silently editing what a client agreed to is not an option in the data model.
- Xero and QuickBooks, both today
Canopy lists a broad integration story. OuroDesk ships working bidirectional syncs for Xero and QuickBooks with encrypted credentials, a job ledger, and manual replay for anything that fails.
- Agents get scoped access, not your password
The MCP server issues tokens bound to one organization with separate read and write scopes, over OAuth 2.1 with PKCE. Canopy has an API and its own AI agent; it does not advertise a comparable MCP server.
- Broader practice-management breadth
Capacity planning and forecasting, close automation, tax resolution, transcripts and notices, internal collaboration and a mobile app — areas OuroDesk does not attempt.
- An AI notetaker and a built-in AI agent
Canopy ships meeting capture and an agent called Coworker. OuroDesk's AI assistant is narrower and always gated behind explicit human approval for any write.
- Client-side financial services
Canopy bundles payments, reporting and capital-planning-adjacent tooling aimed at advisory firms. OuroDesk is a workspace for engagements, not a treasury.
- Established mid-market support
Canopy University, CPE and an enterprise tier for 200-person firms. OuroDesk's Enterprise tier exists but the company is much smaller.
Who should choose Canopy?
If you are a US tax practice that needs IRS transcripts, a native client mobile app, or tax-specific workflow templates, {competitor} is a better fit today. This page is not a claim that one product is better in every case — it is a description of where the two products actually differ.
Questions about switching
- Is OuroDesk cheaper than Canopy?
- Per seat per month, yes. Canopy's Standard plan lists $74 per user per month on annual billing, so a five-person firm is around $4,440 a year. OuroDesk Pro is $29 per seat per month, which is $1,740 a year for the same five people, and you can go month to month.
- Canopy lists an API. Does that make it equivalent to the OuroDesk MCP server?
- No. Canopy has an API for building your own integrations. OuroDesk ships a Model Context Protocol server, which means an AI assistant that already speaks MCP can read your proposals and send an invoice using scoped, organization-bound OAuth tokens, without anyone writing and hosting a custom integration.
- Is OuroDesk a full practice-management suite?
- No, and this page exists partly to say so. OuroDesk covers intake, proposals, signatures, invoicing, payments, documents, time tracking and CRM. It does not do capacity planning, close automation, tax resolution or transcript retrieval. If you need those, Canopy covers more of the firm.
- What happens to my data if I switch?
- Your client list imports from CSV, and proposals, invoices, payments, documents and messages are yours to export. OuroDesk is multi-tenant with per-organization isolation and an append-only audit log, and we would rather you could leave than that leaving were hard.
